2016 champion Billy Hurley III made his moment in National history

Playing in your hometown event is one thing. Winning your hometown event is something entirely different. While Billy Hurley III has been an active supporter of the military initiatives at The National and played in The National numerous year prior to 2016, his experience at Congressional Country Club in late June 2016 will be a week he never forgets.

Playing in the final pairing during Sunday’s fourth round, Hurley made the turn to the back nine looking to solidify his lead. By the time Hurley and his playing partner, World Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els, reached 17 tee, Hurley had the tournament wrapped up. Located 35 yards from the hole on the par 4 15th, Hurley chipped in for birdie to roars from the gallery. On 16 green, a 27-foot birdie putt took Hurley’s lead to three shots, the margin he would win by.

A Leesburg, Virginia native and graduate of the Naval Academy, Hurley spends his time practicing at TPC Potomac. With a permanent locker in the locker room, returning to TPC Potomac for the 2018 National is a homecoming for the former tournament champion.
